Helen Hodgins (nee Maheral)

Obituary of Helen Hodgins (nee Maheral)

May 26,1946 – March 8, 2024

It is with great sadness that Bentley Bemis and Kassidy Hodgins announce the sudden passing of the world’s greatest Granny, Helen Hodgins.

With deep sadness we mourn the passing of a loving and devoted wife, mother and mother-in-law, a wonderful sister and friend. Helen passed away on March 8, 2024 at age 77, peacefully and surrounded by her family following her courageous life battles with diabetes and other illnesses.
She is forever loved by her husband of 54 years Eric Sr., her children Andy Hodgins (Krystal Atkinson) and Tammy Hodgins (Thomas Bemis), her most precious Grandchildren, Bentley and Kassidy.  She will be sadly missed by her siblings Cathy (Jack Stewart), John (Sharon Tanguay), Joan, brother-in-law Brian (Lyn Ryan), Richard, Victor (Heather Campbell), Mary (Lionel Bastien), Raymond (Jan Caruthers), Bernadette, Clarence (Carolyn Roy) and Beatrice (Emerson Timm).

She will also be missed by her Hodgins family, Howard (Ann Ireland), Jessie (late Robert Cairns), late Marion & Ron Workman, and sister-in-law Faye Belanger, also extended family, John Finn (Judy Kelly), Robert Belsher (Joan), Helen Trudeau (Billy) as well as her many friends.

Helen joins her family in heaven: parents John Lawrence & Iphigenie Maheral, parents-in-law Mr. & Mrs. Lorne B. Hodgins, her sister Fran (Brian) and her sisters-in-law Christiane (Vic), Rita (Clarence), Julie (John), Louise (Ray) and her brothers-in-law Yvon (Cathy), Brent (Joan) and Richard (Bernadette) and her two special friends Marge Storie and Joan Sicard.

Helen loved most Our Lord and put Him above all else.  She was an active member of the Bryson Catholic Women’s League, Bryson Lionettes, Bryson, Calumet Island, Campbell’s Bay, Portage du Fort and Quyon Golden Age Clubs.  Helen got much enjoyment in life by being a hockey Mom in her younger days and then by following her nephews and great nephews hockey games whenever and wherever possible. Of course she never missed an Ottawa Senators game either and could easily tell the coaches or players what they were doing wrong and what the referees were missing. Helen so enjoyed playing Euchre and Bingo and being part of her CWL and Lionettes clubs.  Helen's kind heart and generous spirit touched all those who were fortunate enough to know her.

We also offer sincere and endless gratitude to the staff of the Pontiac Community Hospital, CLSC Fort Coulonge and Shawville who provided tender and excellent care for her through her illnesses on earth.

Friends may call at Hayes Funeral Home, 134 Centre Street, Shawville, Quebec on Thursday, March 14, 2024 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.  and on Friday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.  Funeral Mass will be celebrated in Immaculate Conception Church, Bryson, Quebec on Friday, March 15 at 11 a.m.  A reception will follow in the Bryson Lions Hall.  A Catholic Women’s League service will be held on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. and a Bryson Lionettes Service at 8 p.m. in the funeral home.
