Brent Bowie

Obituary of Brent Bowie

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Brent Wayne Joseph Bowie from Calumet Island, Quebec.  After a long and courageous battle with chronic health problems, he passed away surrounded by his loved ones at the Shawville Hospital on January 24th 2024.  He leaves behind his beloved wife of 50 years, Guylaine Bowie (nee Froment), and two daughters; Crystal Bowie and Kelsey Bowie (Curtis Gagnon).

Brent was born to both parents Vera Kensley and Joseph Bowie in Shawville, Quebec on March 26th 1947.  He was raised on his family’s farm in Calumet Island with his three brothers and three sisters.  He met his wife Guylaine Froment of Abitibi-Témiscamingue in Bryson, Quebec in the summer of 1967.  Within a few years, they got married in 1973 in Renfrew, Ontario.  In 1987, they bought their own beautiful farm on Calumet Island, where they would share many cherished memories together with their children.

Brent will always be remembered for his passion in music, prankster personality, and kind-heartedness.  In his earlier years, he played in different bands at hotels across the Ottawa Valley region.  Brent worked for 35 years at the Smurfit-Stone paper mill in Portage-du-Fort, Quebec, where he discovered his calling as a railroad engineer in his final years at the company.  Brent loved many things, but more than anything, he loved and cherished spending time with his wife and children.

Brent and his family wish to extend their gratitude to Dr. Martin Benfey as well as the team at the Ottawa Heart Institute for their attentive care over the last 19 years.  The family is also thankful for the staff at the CLSC (Shawville district) for their care and support.  In his honour, memorial donations can be made to the University of Ottawa Heart Institute Foundation: https://secure2.convio.net/uohi/site/Donation2?df_id=3792&3792.donation=form1&mfc_pref=T

At Brent’s request, there will be no service, funeral, or gatherings.  The family appreciates your condolences and has requested that their privacy be respected during this difficult time of mourning.

Brent will be missed dearly by his family and friends and his legacy will live on forever in our hearts.

“She may be the reason I survive
The why and wherefore I'm alive
The one I'll care for through the rough and ready years
Me, I'll take her laughter and her tears
And make them all my souvenirs
For where she goes I've got to be
The meaning of my life is she”
