Hawley Wickens

Obituary of Hawley Arthur Wickens

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, Hawley Arthur Wickens, on October 7, 2023.  He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Jeannine (nee Benoit). Hawley is also survived by 5 children, Lorraine (Perry Dunn), Loretta (Ed Storey), Lorna (Brent Dagg), Lisa (Derrick Mohr) and Barclay (Trina Kelly).  Hawley was born in Cadillac, Quebec (Abitibi) on November 26, 1938.  Hawley is also survived by his siblings Dorval (Elda), Genevieve (late Clifford Firobin), Carolyn (late Bill Campbell), Elaine (Russell Constable), Harriet, Linda (Terry Welch), Connie (Glen Danis), Kathy (Roland Ashman), Darwin (Holly) and Dorothy (Allan Whitelock).  Predeceased by sister Diane (Clifford French).  “Poppa” will be missed by all 13 of his grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.  They all thought the world of their “Poppa”.  It is a huge family… All the nieces and nephews and cousins will have their own special memories of the time spent at the farm.  Memories forever in everyone’s hearts.  Hawley did many things in his life, from bartending, working at the Shawville Bakeshop (Elliott’s).  Decorating wedding cakes and making buns were his specialties.  He then became an electrician.  He worked at Hilton Mines and J. E. Boyle in Davidson.  He served as a Councillor for the Municipality of Clarendon for 17 years. At around the age of 40 years he decided to work as a full time farmer.  He had been doing both, working, and then coming home to do farm chores.  Hawley had a full and rich life.  He loved nothing better than people coming to visit.  He loved to feed people.  He would fix up a hamburger before you knew it and place it in front of you.  Hawley loved the sugar bush.  Boiling the sap, cooking the hot dogs, trying to make taffy…and talking.
