Obituary of Joy Henderson

HENDERSON Joy Laura (Nee Alexander) Henderson June 26, 1926 – August 17, 2012 Joy was born in North Onslow, Quebec at home on the farm, the fourth child of William and Mary Alexander. She grew up in the area and met and married the love of her life Lloyd Henderson, at the age of 19 in 1944. Together they moved to his family farm and raised a happy family of four, two boys and two girls. Joy worked off the farm now and then at Dodd’s General Store in Wyman and Sutton’s Grocery on the Steel Line. Mostly though, she and Lloyd spent their time tending the dairy (later beef) farm and raising their children. They hosted many a get-together in their home with music and refreshments for all. They lived a good and contented life together before his passing at age 59, in 1984. Joy stayed on the farm for a few years, then moved to Smiths Falls in 1987, where her sister Minola resided, and she spent most of her time with her daughters and grandchildren. After a life well lived and loved, Joy passed away peacefully in Merrickville (Hilltop Manor) at the age of 86. She was predeceased by her parents and siblings Winifred (Ray Archambault), Evelyn (Lloyd Murray), Erline (Irwin Armitage), Minola (Ernie Bradley) and Earl (Kathy). Joy also lost her cherished son Clifton (Janice Wallace) in 2010. She will be greatly missed and always remembered by her three surviving children Bev Gilligan, Royce, Diane (Joe Gallipeau). She was the loving and special “Grammy Joy” to Geoff Gilligan (Mary Ann Delos Santos), Todd Gallipeau (Cheryl), Kerri Gilligan (Matt Maidment), Tracy Gallipeau (Kevin Nolan), Christopher Henderson (Jessica), Matthew Henderson (Emily), Bailey Henderson and Casey Henderson. Grammy Joy was also a doting, proud and playful Great-Grandmother to nine; Dylan Nolan, Evan Maidment, Taylor Nolan, Emily Gallipeau, Drew Maidment, Rachel Gallipeau, Ari Henderson, Lauren Maidment and Gabe Henderson. Joy will also be missed by her surviving sister-in-law Shirley Weatherbee, fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews, and kept in the thoughts of friends, neighbours and acquaintances, both in her home of Wyman (Quyon), Quebec and her later residence in Smith Falls, Ontario. All who knew Joy are welcome to attend the visitation to be held at W. J. Hayes & Sons Funeral Home, 134 Rue Centre, Shawville Quebec on Tuesday, August 21st (2-4 and 7-9 P.M.) Funeral service will be held in the chapel on Wednesday, August 22nd at 11 A.M. followed by a reception (location to be announced) celebrating a life truly well lived and loved. In remembrance, contributions to the Pontiac Community Hospital Foundation, the Alzheimers Society or charity of your choice are welcome and appreciated by the family. Joy’s family wishes to thank her long-time caregiver & companion (and soon to be Granddaughter-in-law, Mary Ann), as well as the staff of Hilltop Manor, Merrickville for their excellent care and devotion through Joy’s last years.
