Obituary of Marion Martel (nee Hodgins)

Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints. Psalm 116:15

Born in time April 22, 1944 Born into eternity January 4, 2022.

For “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”  Romans 10:13

God is good in life, God is good in affliction, and God is good in death. We mourn the loss of our mother, best friend and a sister in Christ, as our grief lingers on, our hearts long for a living hope, a hope that looks beyond the grave, and looks only to Jesus who shed his blood and died for our sins. He was buried and he rose from the dead on the third day. We hold on to this one promise. 2 Corinthians 5:8 to be absent from the body, and to be at home with the Lord. Therefore I live with a hopeful expectation that one fine day we will hug again in a place called glory.

The LORD is close to the broken hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. Psalm 34:18

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and staff, they comfort me. Psalm 23:4

What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Romans 7:24

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?

John 11:25, 26

“The path of sorrow and that path alone, Leads to the place where sorrow is unknown”

And God will wipe every tear from their eyes. Revelation 7:17

Grieve your loss for me but not as one who has no hope. Grieve only for me in light of the cross, for which my sin is gone. I saw the face of Jesus all my tears are gone. Grieve for me in light of the cross. He put before my eyes, my Jesus my Lord, my King. He wiped my last tear away, for there I feel no pain.

WHEN I COME TO DIE GIVE ME JESUS

Softly and tenderly Jesus called our loving mother home, her new life began in the presence of God at 11:01 am on Tuesday January 4, 2022 at the Civic Hospital in Ottawa, Ontario at the age of 77 with her children Joanne and Todd Martel by her side.

However as it is written: “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him” 1 Corinthians 2:9

The peace of God so filled her heart as her breath quieted, then she heard her Savior say. “COME ” She opened wide her eyes, Truly amazed by the glory of God in the face of Jesus, His perfect love and the light of life so filled her soul, and crowned with everlasting joy, singing in very presence of her God.

Jeremiah 31:3 I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with loving-kindness.

Our mother was the youngest of seven children. She grew up poor in a two room farm house in an Irish settlement called Charteris Quebec. Although mom was poor, she was rich in one way.  She was raised knowing the love of God that was expressed through her mother’s life. A little seed of faith was planted and took root in Marion’s young heart. She attended church, joined the choir and it was there she discovered her love to sing. mum had a beautiful voice and could easily lose herself in song.

1 Corinthians 13:4 Love is patient, love is kind

Our mother’s beauty was in her humility. She had a quiet and gentle spirit. Her faith was expressed through many acts of kindness, prompted by the love of God. Her door was always open, ready to help those in need, and there was always room at her table. Her life touched many in different ways. She was selfless and sacrificed much for her children, beyond what many could bear. God gave me my greatest gift, when he gave me a loving mother of faith. She lived her life knowing that her ways were in full view of the Lord and understanding that she was accountable to God. Mom was a woman of Nobel character, honest and hardworking spending most of her career in sales, which was a good fit for her outgoing personality. A country girl at heart, who once said “I’d rather dance than eat.” She suffered much of her losses in silence, her spirit did not bend. Overcoming many illnesses during her lifetime, our mom endured years of chronic pain, and sadly she had to suffered more pain during the last few months of her life.

Only a suffering God could help. Suffering is not a sign of weakness, but entails a decision to love. Mother’s suffering never destroyed her faith in God. Through mom’s life the Lord taught me what perseverance really looks like she persevered to the end.

A final word.   Mom knew this world was not her  home, she was torn by wanting to stay here for those she loved, while longing to be clothed in her heavenly garments and receive a crown fitted only for her.

Here are some of the verses that she underlined  she was longing to go to the place that Jesus had prepared for her.
